Women in technology: where are we in 2025?

Welcome to the moment of time! We will make a short incursion together in the past not very far, with some stops to visit some female characters who have made the history of technology, in often unfavorable contexts.

We therefore return today, facing the future and explore the state of the technological industry in 2025, as regards gender equality and the representativeness of women.

Start!

The year is 1843.

We are in Victorian England, a period in which women were facing important barriers to access formal education and professional opportunities could hardly be, especially in sectors such as science and mathematics.

Despite these challenges, Ada Lovelace (1815-1852)With the support of her mother, she received exceptional education and developed a profound understanding of mathematics and mechanics.

The era was marked by the industrial revolution, which brought rapid technological progress and a charm for cars. Ada was fascinated by the mechanical computers of Charles Babbage (difference engine and analytical engine) and imagined their potential beyond simple calculation.

His notes on the analytical engine are now recognized as the first algorithmic program on the computer. Ada Lovelace has become the first programmer in history.

However, only in the twentieth century, his contributions have become fully appreciated and today Ada is an iconic figure, representative for whole women in technology.

The Matilda effect: The tendency to minimize or ignore women’s contributions in science and other fields, instead attributing them to their fellow men. The term was introduced by Margaret RossiTer in 1990, in honor of Matilda Joslyn Gage. In essence, it refers to the prejudice through which the work of women is often neglected or considered less precious, even if it is of the same quality or even higher than that of men. This effect can also be seen in the biography of Adei Lovelace.

We stop now in the 1940s in the United States.

The spirit of the times was dominated by the war effort and scientific and technological progress was put at the service of military objectives. Women played a crucial role in these progress, taking on roles played by men fought through the ocean.

Grace Hopper (1906-1992) He joined the US naval forces and worked on Harvard Mark I, a first electromechanical computer. Ten years later her developed the first compilerwho translated human language into a car code.

Today nicknamed «The Queen of Code», Grace Hopper has begged the accessibility of computers for a wider range of users. In the period 1960-1980, His work led to the development of CobolA high -level programming language, designed for business applications.

Grace Hopper’s career coincided with a period of rapid technological progress, from electromechanical computers of the 1940s to the ascension of commercial computers and the development of modern programming languages. Despite the fact that he confronted himself with a certain gender prejudice, it was a pioneer who made significant contributions on the field and helped to model the modern IT panorama.

The next stop takes us in the 80s, also in the United States.

The Internet was still in the field of the future, but in this direction there were promising developments.

In the Arpanet era (the precursor of the Internet), or the 1960s-1970 years, a strong emphasis on research and development, determined by the financing of the government, was placed, in particular by the agency for defense research projects (Darpa). The aim pursued was to create robust and reliable communication networks for research purposes and military.

The 80s brought the transformation of Arpanet into what we call the Internet today, with the development of TCP/IP and other essential protocols. It came from a network oriented mainly to research to a wider and democratized network.

The context that made these developments possible was based on innovationA strong impulse to develop new technologies and overcome the boundaries of calculating existing tools. Another order of order was also collaboration: A spirit of cooperation between researchers and engineers to build and extend the network.

In this landscape, his work Elizabeth Feinler (n: 1931)nicknamed The architect of the internet domainsled to the development of the domain name system (DNS). His contribution was essential during this period, because together with his team he provided the essential infrastructure for the growth of the Internet.

And … I arrived at the moment: the year 2025, here and now.

The key characters are You, we, women in the world of technology From today.

We live in an era of progress, but also of persistent challenges. As women in technology, we are at a unique intersection between the potential to satisfy the ideal of gender equality and the real brakes that we are still facing. The spirit of the times is of prudent optimism.

Today’s world is hyper -region and technologically saturated; New platforms, devices and applications appear at a dizzying speed.

The pandemic accelerated the adoption of distance work, leading to a more open and global workforce. The tools and collaboration platforms have become essential for communication and productivity. This trend is in favor of families and could be an opportunity to integrate several women who also interpret a parent for young children.

The technological assumptions are recovering, after the troubled times of 2023-2024, the career prospects that begin to seem promising again. There is a tangible feeling that we adapt to a new reality based on artificial intelligence, automation and extension of access to digitization for everyone.

Evolution has generated a new orientation towards employment based on skills, which presents both opportunities and challenges for women on the field. On the one hand, open new ways to present their skills; On the other hand, it requires constant improvement to keep up with the technologies that evolve rapidly.

The difference in the remuneration between women and men and the below -rapping in key technical roles such as software engineering, data science or even SEO continues to be significant obstacles. The representation of women in technology has recorded modest improvements, but we are still far from equality. Currently, women represent about 35% of employees in the United States in the United States. In Romania, in 2023, only about 26% of those who worked in technology were women (source: Eurostat).

This is an evident growth compared to previous years, but it is clear that we still have a long way to go.

Gender prejudices persist: sometimes open, but more often implicit, such as minimizing women in meetings or questioning their experience. There are also thin challenges, such as the pressure to demonstrate the skills or lack of support in the struggle to balance professional and personal life in a sector known for its demanding hours.

However, there is a growing recognition of the value that various teams bring to solve problems and innovation. Studies have shown that organizations with more diversified staff depending on the genre are 15% higher to overcome their less varied competitors (source: McKinsey).

On the government and European level, constant efforts are also made to deal with gender disappearances and other forms of below -women, with regional development objectives as regards gender equality until 2030. Many companies support their programs of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Despite all challenges, there is a feeling of community and support between women in technology. Professional networks and tutoring become increasingly important, many women who actively work to support each other and create more inclusive environments. Defense programs and groups become increasingly widespread, making efforts for the genre and inclusion (for example, women in technology).

Technological women in 2025 are determined and resilient. They are very aware of the barriers they face, but they also know how important their contributions are to stimulate innovation and create a technology useful for everyone.

In technology, there is a lot of talk about «interruption»). Currently, this happens slowly, but also for the case of representation and the power of women in technology. It seems that we are on the verge of a great transformation, but we still work hard to reshape the culture from the inside outside.

The need for balance is real and equity is not something that will be achieved from today. But with every new voice that joins this approach, more and more women will feel inspired and encouraged to enter the world of technology and the conversations that face prejudice, inclusion at work and equal promotion opportunities have a greater impact. It is a struggle, but a useful and worthy struggle, to which we are honored to unite.
